1. The unpredictability of the exam – It is important to work hard in the exam to get a good job profile, but there is always some role of luck in any multiple-choice question (MCQ) based exam. You can indeed minimize the role of luck by hard-working but still, there is something which you can’t control. You can confirm your selection by your hard work but there are still so many things after selection. Each mark has a value and it can change your grade pay and make you miss your desired post. Also, each mark can make you leave your hometown.

Let’s understand it with an example. In SSC CGL 2016, the cutoff for the last post was 513 for general category candidates and someone with a score of 512.5 has missed a job for sure. The cut off for the post of an income tax inspector, which is one of the best and most popular posts in SSC CGL, was 558.75. There were so many different posts in this range of 513-558.75. Each extra mark could have helped candidates to get their desired post instead of just getting a job. Even if someone got a higher score than cut off, there is still an obstacle left. Most of the candidates in SSC CGL 2020 are from North India and almost all of them want their post to be in their hometown or nearby. After the selection as an income tax inspector, the income tax department asks selected candidates to give their zone preference. One can never be sure of getting his desired zone or location until one gets.

2. Growth – In government jobs, growth and salary are predefined. Even if an employer is performing well in his duty, he will not get an extra increment or any extra incentive. Promotions are seniority-based and there is no substantial pay increment in most of these. The highest paying job through SSC CGL 2020 carries an annual starting CTC of 10 lakhs. There is an annual increment of 3% in basic salary and DA is increased twice a year. Yes, there is a pay commission but it comes only once in ten years.

3. Respect – Respect, and attention you will get after joining the department through SSC CGL 2020 is the greatest aspect of this exam. You will get a lot of respect outside the office but you are working as one of the employees in the department. The one who clears UPSC CSE and joins as Assistant Commissioner (IRS) will get all the attention and respect inside the department. No matter how many promotions or experience you have, you will not reach anywhere near the status of IAS/IPS.

4. Corruption – There is a misconception among people that government employee earns huge money under the table. It is not a rumor but not a fact either. There is some scope of corruption in some of the posts of SSC CGL 2020 but it is one the wane when digitalization started. Once you are caught, your career and respect will be completely gone. You will certainly lose your peace of mind if you indulge in corruption activities. The scope of corruption should not be your parameter while deciding your career option.
